Light of Day News is an independent media, education, and advocacy project built on a simple conviction: democracy works better when people know the truth—and justice becomes possible when we refuse to look away.
We exist to ILLUMINATE TRUTH. DEMAND JUSTICE. INSPIRE HOPE.
Light of Day News was founded by John Michael Lockhart, a former community newspaper publisher and former Republican activist, who spent a decade holding more than half a dozen appointive and elective offices in the Louisiana GOP in the 1980s and early 1990s, before founding a community weekly in 1994. His political journey helped shape one of the principles at the heart of this project: Country before party. Constitution before politicians. People before power.
We believe journalism should do more than tell people what happened. It should help them understand why it happened, who benefits, who pays the price, and what ordinary people can do about it.
That means following facts wherever they lead. It means questioning people in power regardless of the title they hold or the party they represent. It means confronting misinformation rather than amplifying it. And it means paying particular attention to people whose experiences are too often treated as an afterthought.
People are at the center of what we do.
Political decisions aren't abstractions.
They determine whether someone can afford a doctor.
Whether a family can put food on the table.
Whether a worker receives a fair wage.
Whether a child receives a good education.
Whether an immigrant is treated with dignity.
Whether an LGBTQ+ person can live openly and safely.
Whether a citizen can cast a ballot without unnecessary obstacles.
Whether justice works equally for the powerful and the powerless.
And whether the promise contained in the words “We the People” truly includes all of us.
Light of Day News focuses on civil and human rights, economic and racial justice, healthcare access, voting rights and democracy, immigrant rights, LGBTQ+ equality, workers and families, the environment, and the systems of political and economic power that affect everyday lives.
We intend to pay particular attention to people and communities who have historically had the least power to command the attention of politicians, institutions, and the media.
We are independent. We are not neutral about injustice.
Light of Day News is not affiliated with a political party or campaign. But independence does not require indifference.
We will not pretend that every issue has two equally truthful sides when the evidence says otherwise. We will not manufacture false equivalence in the name of appearing impartial. And we will not ignore cruelty, discrimination, corruption, authoritarianism, or attacks on democratic institutions because identifying them might be considered “political.”
Our responsibility is to the FACTS... not the "alternative facts."
When elected officials do something right, we should say so. When they fail the people they were elected to serve, we should say that too.
Our work will distinguish reporting from commentary, rely on credible evidence, identify sources whenever practical, explain relevant context, and correct meaningful mistakes when we make them.
Readers should never have to simply take our word for something.
We want you to see the evidence for yourself.
Journalism is only part of the mission.
Light of Day News was never intended to become just another website where people read something upsetting, shake their heads, and move on.
We want to connect information with action.
Sometimes that means helping people understand legislation or public policy. Sometimes it means providing voter information. Sometimes it means amplifying an overlooked voice or organization. Sometimes it means showing readers exactly whom to contact and how to make themselves heard.
And sometimes it means bringing people together around something hopeful and constructive.
Because exposing what is wrong is not enough.
We should also celebrate what is right.
Generosity. Compassion. Courage. Literacy. Opportunity. Equality. Dignity. Kindness. Community. People crossing the lines that divide us to help somebody else.
Light of Day News will challenge injustice, but we refuse to surrender to cynicism.
Truth should lead somewhere.
We live in a time when political leaders, partisan media, algorithms, and powerful financial interests can profit from keeping Americans angry at one another.
We believe there is another way.
We can disagree without dehumanizing one another.
We can confront injustice without abandoning hope.
We can expose those who divide us while celebrating those who bring us together.
We can listen to people whose experiences are different from our own.
And we can recognize that extending dignity and opportunity to someone else does not diminish our own.
The purpose of bringing something into the light of day isn't simply to expose it.
It is to finally see it clearly enough to do something about it.
That is the work we intend to do.
